This was me yesterday. Okay, minus the bathing suit, life board thing and big boobs… this was me.
I was driving along when I saw a young man crippley laying on the side of the road. I quickly break and reverse and tell the girls to roll down their windows and ask him if he is okay and if he needs help. Nothing. No movement. No response. He had a helmet on and a paintball gun, but if you don’t know what one looks like, it can be quite scary! One of the girls was yelling for us to stay in the car, as I jump out and run to the man’s side.
Nothing. I yell to the girls that he needs help as I dial 911. The girls came out of the car and tried to help. Barely breathing, not moving and eyes rolling into the back of his head. Terrifying.
Thank God another car pulled over to help, as I was informed to loosen anything around his waist and neck. Since he was at a paintball tournament, he had lots of heavy equipment on him. Soon after the ambulance, fire truck and police show up and lift his, as it appeared, life less body onto the stretcher and into the ambulance.
And my good deed of the day was done, as I drove off in shock.
It is unbelievable how at any second, your world can change. We found out he was a teenage boy who possibly was just extremely overheated. It was still to be determined what happened when they took him away. All I could think about was his poor mother getting a phone call from the hospital. You’d immediately assume the worst. But it definitely takes a certain type of person to just snap in that mode and go! It pays off. If you have the opportunity to help someone, take the chance! Even if it’s a smile, or holding the door open, it makes a world of a difference.
You always think, someone else will stop and help, or step in and take charge. But you never know. We have no idea how long that boy had been laying there with cars driving past him, thinking the next person will stop. Who knows if anyone would have stopped?
Love each day, cause you never know when it will be your last.
