disowning the guelph storm for a night

When the NHL season fails us, which they seriously have – let’s be honest here, us Canadians have to resort to necessary means to satisfy our addiction. Okay, well, if you’re Canadian, you probably already watch all hockey available but whatever. Just go with it because I want to use that as my transition into today’s story, okay?

You don’t have to be a writer for Canadian lifestyle blogs to gawd damn fureaking hate the NHL right now. Heck! You don’t even have to be a hockey fan to realize how ridiculous all this money shazz and no season shizz is. I’m frustrated, can you tell? It’s that time of year when we get cozy with some hot chocolate in a cold hockey rink, or when you grab some drinks with some friends while cheering on your favourite team. It’s the hockey season. Wait, no. That doesn’t exist anymore. It’s stupid.

Stupid. Stupid. Stooopid.

However, we have other options, and for me, it’s watching OHL games. I always have watched them, though. Well, I’ve always watched Guelph Storm games because that’s the team that I have grown up to love. My mother worked at Guelph Storm as I was growing up, and I spent a lot of time at the rink, giggling and mingling with the towering hockey players, like Todd Bertuzzi, when I was a wee-little girl. And for those of you wondering, yes, I was as cool then as I am now,  thanks.

My mother no longer works there, but I do know some of the staff still, but I am even more connected to Guelph Storm now than ever because my Dad billets them. For those of you wondering, that means that some of the boys live with my parents during the season, so when I go visit my parents, I go see the boys as well.

Long story short, it may be weird cheering for boys much younger than me, but hockey is so much better when you know the players, and OHL is excusable for 23 year old me when some of the players are like family.

Forbes Motors surprised me with some fabulous OHL tickets for that very night. The Kitchener Rangers were playing, and although it wasn’t my team that they were up against, I was stoked to go. After all, it’s the only hockey that we have!

So, off I went to the Rangers game, cheering on my Guelph rivals! Yup. I disowned Guelph Storm for a night. It was weird. But seriously, the seats were right on the glass and I may have peed my pants a bit. I’ve been this way ever since I was a little 5-year-old girl with season tickets. Whenever they slam up against those boards, which is often… and extremely hard, I scream.

Now that I’m older, a few curse words tend to slip in there from now and then.

Love, love, LOVE that you’re supporting a local team, how Canadian of you! Some of the best hockey in the world is played on that ice. All heart. The NHL has lost all my respect. That’s so funny about bertuzzi. I used to serve him here in Vancouver all time time. He would roll up to our restaurant in his pearl lambourghini, sit at the bar, and grunt like a neanderthal, lol!
